I was fortunate to visit Auburn Old Town Gallery during a day trip to Auburn, CA. The gallery has an impressive variety of artwork from local artists and is well-worth a stop. If you can’t do the road trip, you can check out and purchase artwork through their website. Gallery Publicity Chair, Susan Stoll, shares with us a behind the scenes look.
Tell us a little about your artists and Auburn Old Town Gallery.
Auburn Old Town Gallery features the works of over 50 local artists who explore a wide range of media. The gallery celebrated its 25th year in business this September.
How do you usually find your artists?
We put out a call to artists and encourage artists to have their works juried. Detailed information regarding the jurying process can be found on our website,
What advice would you give artists who are looking to get their work in a gallery?
It is important to submit a cohesive body of work that accurately represents themselves. Make sure to pay attention to the details. The finishing touches on their works matter. For example if the piece is 2D, is the frame in good condition? What is the price-point of their works? Artists should have quality photographs of their work to submit to galleries along with their resume.
It is a good idea to look at any gallery to see what they are showing. This allows artists to see if their work could be a good fit.
How has the gallery met the challenges presented by the pandemic?
The pandemic has definitely posed challenges as to how to safely resume gallery operations. Initially, upon reopening, we had to open fewer days with shorter hours of operation. This was to insure we had enough members who were comfortable and able to work shifts. We installed a plexiglass barrier at the register and placed markers near the register to remind customers of the need to keep an appropriate distance from one another. Hand sanitizer stations have been placed throughout the gallery and masks are available if someone doesn’t have one. We are adhering to the recommended guidelines of mask wearing and social distancing. All members who are staffing the gallery have been given guidelines for cleaning protocol and safety. We offer curbside pickup and shipping is available on much of our artwork. We are very happy to be open and greatly appreciate support from the community.
