Judge Your Book By Its Cover

Karen Michelle Nutt has graciously agreed to do a guest post today.  While her books reflect her fascination with other realms, her market savvy is very much in tune with the here and now.  For you e-book authors out there, who only have a thumbnail image to make an impression, an eye-catching cover is especially important.—S. Winters

Judge Your Book By Its Cover

We’ve been told not to judge a book by its cover. Hogwash. Of course we judge a book by its cover. It’s the first thing we see when deciding to pick up a book and find out what it’s all about. It is the first impression. Your advertisement for your next best seller. You don’t want your key marketing tool to be a shoddy representation of your tale. The book cover is your Hollywood movie poster. What draws you in to see that big blockbuster? With millions of books out there to choose from, you want your book cover to draw attention and your back cover should compel the reader to want more.

You only have a few seconds to catch a reader’s eye when there is over 200 thousand books sold each year. An engaging cover will put you ahead of the competition. Sure, your book is the best book ever written in the literary world, but if your book cover is boring at best, readers will pass it up without a second glance.

An eye catching book cover doesn’t mean shock and awe. Your book cover is the attire for your tale. It must dress the part. You wouldn’t wear jeans and flip-flops to a formal black-tie dinner party. The same goes with your book cover. You wouldn’t put a scantily clothed gal on the cover of your young adult book. Your cover must fit the genre. You want to pique a reader’s interest in a good way. With one glance, your target audience should be able to identify with your work.

    • Jacqueline,
I agree with you–less is more particularly with e-books. Thanks for the link to your post! Rookie authors out there, if you do have the opportunity to either design your own cover or work with a designer–check out other authors’ covers to see what style catches your eye.
